Senior Adult Ministry

Ernest Hill, Minister of Senior Adults

Rays of Sunshine - September  2008

Even though Mount Zion Baptist Church is primarily a young to middle adult congregation, we have a vital, active senior adult ministry that is growing along with the rest of the congregation. Our senior adults have been very active in the ministry of our Lord and Mount Zion Baptist Church and will continue to serve vital functions of ministry in the future. As you look at the elected leadership it becomes very apparent that the senior adults are active in all areas of our church life and we are very thankful for their ministry. We believe that growing older does not mean that we should become less active in our Lord’s ministry, but rather we should find the place of service that God has for us where we can use our knowledge and experience for His glory.

Our senior adult ministry consists of several areas.

  • SonShine Club activities

  • Monthly meetings

  • Trips and activities

  • Ministries

  • SonShine Singers (senior adult choir)

  • Involvement in other programs of the church: Sunday School, Discipleship Training, Woman’s Missionary Union, Brotherhood and Music.

This program is planned and administered under the direction of a Senior Adult Planning Council and the Minister to Senior Adults. This group plans a yearly calendar of activities and ministries.

This specific ministry was begun in the early 1970s and continued primarily as a senior adult club ministry into the late 1980s. The ministry was revitalized in 1990 when the church asked Bro. Ernest Hill to take on the responsibility of Minister to Senior Adults. The SonShine Club was formed in 1990 and in 1993 the SonShine Singers were formed. The SonShine Club and SonShine Singers have steadily grown. On Easter Sunday night, April 7, 1996, the SonShine Singers presented their first ever Easter musical, “The Footsteps of Jesus.”
